Textbook of Neuroanesthesia: With Neurosurgical and Neuroscience Perspectives

Introducing the most authoritative and comprehensive text on both the scientific foundations and the clincial practice of neuroanesthesia. It combines the expertise of anesthesiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and radiologists, who present the most up-to-date information on the pathophysuilogy and anesthetic management of all neurosurgical procedures. Summaries of relevant anatomy and physiology are reviewed with each procedure. Includes entire sections on pediatric neuroanesthesia, neuroradiological procedures including the latest interventional techniques, and more. This is a major, authoritative neuroanesthesia text. It covers every significant relevant condition, including neuroradiology, pediatric neurological disease, and neurophysiology. It is one of the largest textbooks in anesthesiology, well over 1,300 pages. The editor seeks to "present the reader with an understanding of the fundamental considerations relating to neuroanesthesia and neurosurgery ... in both the adult and pediatric age groups. The result is an encyclopedic reference text. The likely audience includes libraries, neuroanesthesia fellows, and specialist practitioners. The book is twice as long as other neuroanesthesia texts. Its form is that of a classic reference text. The writing style is formal, dense, and occasionally turgid. There are more than 9,600 references, many from 1994 and 1995, and even a few from 1996. This is twice the number of references in the other, standard neuroanesthesia textbook. Some chapters contain more than 800 references, whereas others contain as few as 16. There are many line drawings, photographs, and tables; the quality of these is uniformly high. The paper is fine grade. The typesetting is more pleasing than similar texts. Unfortunately, the chapter subheadings are unnumbered; full caps, small caps, and bold type are used to distinguish sections and subsections, making it somewhat difficult to use. Substantial effort is required to create such a comprehensive work. Specialist practitioners, to whom this book will be most attractive, will recognize that the book reflects a flash photograph of a fast-changing scene. It offers strong evidence, if more were needed, that neuroanesthesia is a separate specialty in anesthesiapractice. Undoubtedly, an electronic version must appear soon but the physical book remains attractive and satisfying in ways that ensure its commercial success during the next few years. Albin, Maurice S., MD, MSc (Anes) (Univ of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio)The contributors represent the specialties of neurology, anesthesiology, radiology, neurosurgery, psychiatry. Most are from academic hospitals and universitites in the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Singapore. Institutions prominently represented include Univ of Michigan, Univ of Texas-San Antonio, Univ of Toronto, Univ of Washington, Harvard, Duke, McGill Univ, Baylor, Univ of Pittsburgh, USC, UCSF, Univ of Illinois-Chicago, and Univ of Maryland.
