Cardiology in Primary Care

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some two-color illustrations. This book is designed to answer fundamental questions about cardiac care for the primary care practitioner: How do I diagnose? How can I help my patients prevent heart disease? Which diseases should I manage and what are the steps to take? When do I consult with or refer to a cardiologist? What should I watch for if my patient has a cardiovascular condition? How do I educate my patients? What is the most effective and economical course of action? Each chapter is coauthored by a generalist and a cardiologist to ensure the primary care focus is fused with the latest scientific breakthroughs. The primary care practitioner's handbook to the fundamentals of cardiac care, such as diagnostic procedure guidelines. Addresses all aspects of etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention issues for patient with heart disease. This is an up-to-date review of cardiovascular topics written by cardiologists and primary care physicians. The purpose is to present to the general health practitioner (family physicians, internists, nurse clinicians) guidelines for the evaluation and management of common cardiovascular problems. In view of the magnitude of the cardiac problems encountered in the general population and the fact that the initial contacts with most of the patients with suspected or proven vascular diseases is with a primary care physician, this is an exceedingly worthwhile addition to our resources to deal with cardiovascular problems. This book was prepared for healthcare workers and primary care physicians. Interestingly enough, the topic selection and the reviews are done jointly by cardiologists and primary care physicians. The book is divided into four parts: an initial evaluation of symptoms and signs of cardiovascular disorders; a review of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases; management of the cardiovascular problems; and a discussion of topics of special interest for the primary care practitioner. This book is very clearly written, easy to read, and up to date. A minor criticism is the paucity of illustrations. I enjoyed reviewing this book very much. The editors provide a succinct, practical approach to cardiovascular problems targeted for and prepared by primary care physicians jointly with cardiologists. Branch, William T, Jr., MD (Emory Univ); Alexander, R. Wayne, MD, PhD (Emory Univ); Schlant, Robert C., MD (Emory Univ); Hurst, J. Willis, MD (Emory Univ)
