An entirely new chapter on "General Concepts of Endocrinology" summarizes hormone actions and in enactions and their molecular basis. Every chapter includes advances in molecular biology and the diagnosis and management of the various syndromes. This accessible text is a thorough overview of all aspects of endocrinology. Features: summarizes molecular mechanisms in synthesis, secretion, and action of hormones; individual endocrine syndrome chapters analyze current diagnostic methods; combines basic pathophysiology with practical clinical applications; contributions by leading physician-researchers; abundantly illustrated; and useful appendix of normal values for endocrine tests in both conventional and SI units. THE #1 TEXT IN CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY—WITH LEADING-EDGE DEVELOPMENTS

*Current practice standards incorporated into discussion of endocrine aspects of metabolic bone disease, growth, sexual differentiation, pregnancy, obesity, lipoproteins, and AIDS, as well as the unique problems of geriatric patients and endocrine emergencies This book provides an updated review of endocrine pathophysiology as well as an approach to the diagnosis and therapy of endocrine disorders. This is the fourth edition; the last was published in 1991. The purpose is to provide a current review of the pathophysiology of endocrine disease and a guide to the clinical diagnosis and management of endocrine syndromes. The book is most successful in attaining these goals. According to the authors, the book is aimed primarily at medical students, with the secondary audience being endocrinologists. The book is most appropriate for students, residents, and fellows. It also will serve well for internists and subspecialists. However, it is not written in enough depth to be of use to the endocrinologist. The book contains no color, but the black-and-white illustrations and radiographs are all pertinent and clear. The figures and tables are very useful. The references cited are appropriate and current. They adequately reflect the important literature in the area. The book is well organized, and it is easy to find topics of interest. This is a thorough and current review of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and therapy of endocrine diseases that is apporpriate for the medical student, resident, and fellow as well as the general internist. It is most appropriate for medical school libraries and bookstores. It also has utility as a reference book in the clinician's office. New edition of the standard text first published by Jack Lange in 1983. (We wonder if that first edition also appeared some 1/3 year before the arrival of 1983.) Greenspan, Francis S., MD (UCSF); Baxter, John D., MD (UCSF)More than half of the contributors are from UCSF. Specialties most prominently represented are pediatrics, gynecology, surgery, physiology, and endocrinology. Other institutions represented are Harvard, Emory, Case Western Reserve, and LSU.
