Injury Prevention for the Elderly: A Research Guide, Vol. 30

This authoritative and unique guide describes important sources dealing with injury prevention for the elderly in a comprehensive manner. It is a unique survey of 621 references, covering injury prevention in general and all types of accidents and problems by topic, including the use of alcohol and problems, elder abuse, malnutrition, and suicide. Designed for researchers and teachers in all levels of gerontology, social work, and health care, as well as for those who care for elders in long-term facilities and in the community. This book, an annotation of recent literature on injury prevention in the elderly, is the 30th in a series entitled Bibliographies and Indexes in Gerontology, with series advisor Erdman Palmore. Because it is no longer possible to keep up-to-date on the vast amount of information in any given scientific area, this series was developed to provide comprehensive reviews and references for work done in various fields of gerontology. This book specifically is to provide information that can be used to develop injury prevention programs for elderly persons. The series advisor and author indicate that this book is intended for anyone providing care to older people and to policymakers. However, this book also would be useful for faculty in developing or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in health promotion/injury prevention in the elderly. There are 13 chapters in this book, all constructed similarly with an introductory paragraph to the topic followed by annotations of recent literature arranged alphabetically by the last name of the first author. Each reference is annotated in about one-third to one-half page of text. The first chapter is on general injury prevention; the remaining 12 chapters are on specific and significant injuries in the elderly, e.g., adverse medication effects, falls, and hypo- and hyperthermia, to name three. The reader can access the references to these topics three ways: (1) by the chapter/injury of interest, (2) by the index of topics (more specific than chapter topics), and (3) by the index of authors. This book is essential for those interested in injury prevention in the elderly. It is an excellent means for easily accessing important literature onthe topics of general injury prevention and specific injury areas. The only limitation is that the most recent publication appears to be 1994, resulting from the production time for this publication. However, the wealth of information otherwise at hand overcomes this minor limitation. An annotated guide to references (including videos) that provides information which could be used to develop an injury prevention training program curriculum for people who care for the elderly in long-term care facilities as well as in the community. Following a chapter on general injury prevention, the remaining chapters are arranged by injury class. The references selected are those which provide information about prevalence, risk factors, specific causes, and prevention techniques. A summary of the findings is presented at the beginning of each chapter.
