Emergency Care in the Streets

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. This is the fifth edition of one of the original texts used by paramedic training programs. It replaces the fourth edition, published in 1991, and updates many older concepts and therapies. It remains a single-author text. This book serves primarily as a learning tool for paramedic students, presenting the educational objectives set forth in the revised USDOT curriculum. These objectives are well met by the author. By far, the main audience of this book remains paramedic students and their instructors. It also helps define for others, such as EMS or training program medical directors and mobile intensive care nurses, the concepts and therapies used by paramedics, including their responsibilities and limitations. The illustrations are mostly black-and-white, with some color emphasis. Key concepts are enclosed in highlighted boxes for easy recognition. There are three glossaries, one each for medical root words, common medical abbreviations, and medical terms. This serves to ensure the understanding of medical terminology. There is also a section describing commonly used paramedic drugs. Paramedic skills are well presented, with excellent drawings and descriptions. The index is good, and the table of contents is adequate. Each chapter has a long list of references for further reading. These are a bit excessive and could be thinned somewhat. This book remains one of the standard texts for the training of paramedics. This new edition, with updated sections, provides the material needed by paramedic students today.
