Anesthesia: A Comprehensive Review

This review book presents over 1,000 multiple-choice questions designed to test knowledge of one or more pertinent topics and principles of the practice of anesthesiology. It is an excellent tool for Board review. Answers and concise explanations for each question are listed in the back of the book. Topics covered include: physics, pharmacology, physiology, equipment, general anesthesia, and subspecialty aspects of the practice. This book contains 995 multiple-choice questions designed to test the knowledge of medical residents; correct answers and brief explanations are included. Reviewing both basic and clinical sciences, 11 chapters concentrate on topics related to anesthesia, including: equipment, respiratory physiology, pharmacology, blood products, general anesthesia, pediatrics, neurological physiology, cardiovascular physiology, and pain management. This second edition review book employs approximately1,000 board-type questions to highlight pertinent information withinvarious subspecialties of anesthesia. The answer section devotes aparagraph or more (with occasional tables/figures) to present acomprehensive explanation of each question and the correspondinganswer. It is intended to serve as a review tool. Its aim is tounderscore the important concepts in the practice of anesthesiology andquestion the reader about them. These objectives hold strong emphasisespecially to graduating residents or new practitioners preparing forthe certification exam. The quality of the questions and theappropriate level at which the knowledge is tested are commendable. The answer section also provides a concise, yet thorough explanation ofeach topic. This book is specifically targeted to anesthesiologyresidents or anesthesiologists in practice who are preparing for thecertification exam. It also may serve as a tool to reexamine one'sknowledge base for those who seek to review pertinent topics inanesthesiology. It is sparingly illustrated, but the fewillustrations are pertinent and easy to review. The references are thelatest editions of major anesthesiology text books authored by experts. Not many articles are referenced. The topics of critical care andrenal and hepatic physiology are not reviewed in any detail. Thisbook presents the pertinent information and knowledge required for thecertification exam exceptionally well. The questions reflect the levelof the certification exam quite closely. It may prove extremely usefulfor residents preparing for the exam. Of note, the actual board examcontained a number of questions which were nearlyidentical to theinformation being tested in this review book. It should serve as avaluable addition to the library of any individual preparing for theexam as well as anesthesia department libraries. As new informationevolves in the field of anesthesiology, new editions highlighting suchdevelopments seem warranted. Hall, Brian A., MD (Mayo Clinic); Jones, Keith A., MD (Mayo Clinic)The contributors represent the specialty of anesthesiology, and all are from the Mayo Clinic.
