This third edition is an in-depth reference discussing complications in the management of orthopedic problems. The prior edition was issued in 1986. As in previous editions, this book was written to give guidance in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of complications in orthopedic surgery. The audience is orthopedic surgeons and residents. It also has become a frequent addition to the libraries of the legal profession involved with medical liability cases. The two-volume set is nicely illustrated, well referenced, and comprehensive. This book, when first published, was a landmark in its field. This new edition continues its excellent heritage. The advent of new procedures and knowledge in orthopedics make an updated version necessary. I highly recommend it for all hospital or departmental libraries. It should be reviewed by all practicing orthopedists to help them maintain optimal patient care. A revised and updated text (2nd ed., 1986) that provides orthopedic surgeons with data for guidance in treatment of patients who have experienced unfavorable outcomes or complications. The format continues to be in four parts. In Part One the discussions cover general considerations, anesthesia, traction and appliances, external fixation, bracing, implants, infections, and the role of secondary gain. Part Two covers the complication of trauma, and Part Three covers the complications of arthroplasty and total joint replacement. In Part Four the complications of reconstructive surgery, arthrodesis, hip osteotomies, burns, amputations, and surgery for neoplasms, among other subjects, are discussed. There are new chapters on orthroscopy and complications of hip and knee osteotomies to keep pace with developments in orthopedic surgery.
