Chest Radiology Companion

This compact book is a summary of important topics in chest radiology. A format similar to a dual projection slide lecture is used. Bulleted key facts are listed on each left-hand page, while illustrative images with captions are on the right-hand page. The purpose is to provide a practical guide to interpret the adult chest radiograph. This is a worthy purpose, as it will help residents interpret chest radiographs. Most of the important areas in chest imaging are discussed, but there are some omissions. There is no discussion of chest imaging anatomy, and no discussion of the relationships between imaging appearances and pathologic and physiologic abnormalities. This book is written for radiology residents. The authors are well-known and experienced chest radiologists. This book begins with a brief fundamentals section -- including techniques -- and a comprehensive section on CT protocols. In the section on lung disease a pattern approach is used to common radiographic abnormalities, including focal and diffuse parenchymal opacity, solitary pulmonary nodules, masses, and cavities. The section on the media sternum includes subsections on the heart, great vessels, and esophageal disease. The final sections cover the chest wall and diaphragm, and on the imaging approach to common medical problems. One or two references are included as suggested readings after each topic. One shortcoming is the quality of the illustrations. The images are all less than 2.5 inches wide, making it difficult to see fine radiographic detail. Few close-up radiographic images are provided. Arrows would have been helpful on some images to indicate subtle abnormalities. This book would be a usefulpre-board review for residents. It contains a large number of facts in a relatively compact format. The availability of illustrations makes it more useful than the popular review books such as Dahnert's Radiology Review Manual, 3rd Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1996). However, it will not replace a formal textbook. Illustrates common abnormalities that radiologists, residents, or pulmonary medicine specialists can apply to a spectrum of conditions and accurately interpret adult chest radiography. Arranged in sections on methods; the lung; the mediastrum; the chest wall, pleura, and diaphragm; and common medical problems. Emphasizes the differential diagnosis of such processes as inflammatory, neoplastic, vascular, congenital, and traumatic. The bibliographic references are topic specific. Stern, Eric J., MD (Univ of Washington); White, Charles S., MD (Univ of Maryland)
