This text serves as an atlas of normal MR anatomy of the joints and as a reference source for pathology of the musculoskeletal system. It particularly emphasizes sports-related injuries. This is a second edition, revised from the 1993 text. The second edition adds chapters on cartilage and muscle injury as well as specialized applications such as preoperative meniscal allograft sizing and echoplanar techniques. This book is written for the resident and practitioner of radiology. It is written at an appropriate level as a reference text. This edition has 1,500 new images. Each anatomic chapter has color dissections, anatomic drawings, and MR of the normal anatomy in standard planes. These anatomic portions have not been changed substantially since the original edition. The normal anatomy sections are followed by discussions and illustrations of pathology. Several new illustrations are included in each chapter. This book is extremely useful to keep within reach as orthopedic MRIs are evaluated. However, it does not serve as a complete reference book for all MRI of the musculoskeletal system. This is far too broad a subject for this single book. It succeeds best with sports medicine (to which approximately 90 percent of the pathologic discussion is devoted), but the discussions are quite superficial in other areas, for example, tumor. One might prefer this book to concentrate on a more detailed analysis of sports medicine because this is in fact what it is primarily used for. Although the sports medicine discussions are not completely detailed, the references are excellent and this text is an easily used source to find information on most sports-medicine related topics. Replacing the author's 1989 textbook, Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Orthopaedics and Rheumatology, this reference addresses the growing need of radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and sports medicine physicians to understand and incorporate new clinical applications of bone and joint imaging into their practices. Significant advances in the understanding and application of MR imaging in the wrist, shoulder, knee, and hip have been incorporated with the assistance of orthopaedic contributors. Separate chapters on marrow disorders, tumors, kinematic imaging, and three-dimensional rendering techniques are included. Because the quality of MR studies is related to an accurate correlation with gross anatomy and surgical findings, detailed multiplanar MR normal anatomy sections are incorporated into the appendicular joint chapters, as are relevant gross surgical dissection color images. Arthroscopic and histologic photographs are included to support anatomic and pathologic findings.
