Handbook of Lower Extremity Neurology

This is a nice review book of common lower extremity neurologic disorders, including diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, as well as useful physical diagnosis information. This purpose is to provide a reference base for practicing physicians, medical students, and other healthcare personnel. The target audience is medical students, residents, and primary care physicians looking for a detailed description of lower extremity neurology. The book is a nice overview of many common neurologic disorders, including upper and lower motor lesions, gait disorders, neuropathies, and other common neurologic problems. The editors and contributors present the information in a neat and concise manner, with excellent historical information as well. There are a few unique chapters involving infectious disease, vascular disease, physical therapy, and two interesting chapters about functional capacity evaluation and the Disabilities Act. Currently there appears to be a definite lack of handbooks in the field of lower extremity neurology. The only way to find information similar to that presented in this book is to reference general neurology or podiatry textbooks and filter through their mounds of information. This book fills a definite niche by providing all the information in a concise handbook. Other neurology handbooks, such as Samuels' Manual of Neurologic Therapeutics, 6th Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1999) and Simon's Clinical Neurology, 4th Edition (Appleton & Lange, 1999) focus almost entirely on the upper motor disorders and have virtually no information on lower extremity disorders. Therefore, this book fills a much needed niche in the neurologyliterature. Mandel, Steven, MD (Jefferson Medical Coll of Thomas Jefferson Univ); Willis, Jeanean, DPM (Temple Univ)
