Congenital and Perinatal Infections: Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment

Congenital and perinatal infections remain a stubborn and major cause of morbidity and mortality in infants throughout the world. This concise, accessible account provides an essential guide to the diagnosis, management, and prevention of these infections. The first three chapters underline how and why infections during this critical period can be so devastating. The main section of the book focuses on individual infections, and emphasizes effective intervention based on the very latest knowledge and techniques. Another unique feature of this account is its recognition that the severity and types of these infections vary considerably from country to country, and from the developing world to the developed world. Congenital and perinatal infections are of interest to obstetricians, midwifes, and pediatricians, and thus span a wide range of specialties in medicine. Furthermore, the field is developing so rapidly that it appears close to impossible for the busy, general practitioner to keep up. A concise, up-to-date review is therefore a useful supplement to in-depth extensive reviews, which are often outdated by the time they are published. This book is the update. The expressed purpose is to provide a concise, up-to-date review focused on recent advances and their impact on screening methods. While up-to-date, this book is not as concise as it could be, as there is some repetition between and even within chapters. The target audiences are obstetricians, pediatricians, and midwifes in developing and developed nations. While this is a useful review for this readership, the connection to relevant working conditions in developing nations is missing in several chapters. This is the first edition, and clearly is as up-to-date as a printed book can be. There is an excellent review of recent epidemiological and diagnostic trends. The editors cover the important infectious agents (with the exception of enterovirus and adenovirus, which are not as common or important), and give clear, concise summaries of clinical presentations (often in tabular format), and refreshingly short microbiological sections. This book fits the needs of the busy clinician. I find the book easy to read, despite the various contributors (kudos to the editors). As stated above, all the important new information is nicely integrated into short reviews of the entire subject matter at hand. The impact of new trends onscreening and diagnostic aspects are well presented also. While repetitious in various segments, this book nevertheless fills a gap with this concise, up-to-date review of a subject matter too important to be outdated.
