Current Clinical Topics in Infectious Diseases, Vol. 19

An annual update devoted to state of the clinical art in selected topics in infectious deseases. Volume 17 covers such topics as management of Nocardial infections, cyclospora infection, and bartonella infections. This volume also reviews different vaccines and treatments of infectious disease in adults as well as infants and children. The twentieth volume of this acclaimed annual reference addresses seventeen of the most important and timely issues in infectious disease in concise, practical, carefully edited chapters.
This book focuses on timely issues in infectious diseases and updates the reader on current issues in their diagnosis and management. This is volume 13 of an annual series published by these authors. The purpose is to present timely, concise summaries and critical commentaries on subjects in infectious diseases that are pertinent to practitioners and students of medicine. The target audience includes medical practitioners and students, allied health care workers, and infectious disease subspecialists. Infectious disease physicians are more likely to purchase this book, because the issues presented are those on which these subspecialists might more commonly be consulted. There are no color illustrations, but the figures, graphs, and radiographs are of good quality and are well presented. Some chapters have no figures. The references are generally up-to-date. An important feature is that the topics are well reviewed and are so new that they will not likely be in recent textbooks in such detail. This book is well written on pertinent and timely issues in infectious diseases. Chapters are readable and written by respected authors in the field. This book would be a good addition to any infectious disease specialist's collection or to a medical library. This is the nineteenth book in an annual series, with 16 multiauthored chapters covering a wide range of subjects in clinical infectious diseases. Infectious diseases are constantly changing, with emerging and re-emerging pathogens, as well as the profound challenges of antimicrobial resistance. This book generally meets its primary objective to provide updated information in specific areas of infectious diseases. According to the editors, it is intended for students and practitioners of medicine, infectious diseases, and allied fields. However, one would only expect infectious disease specialists and trainees to purchase this book. Recognized experts have written the articles with this audience in mind. A wide range of timely topics are covered, from common diseases and problems (such as influenza and chronic dermatophytic infections) to the more esoteric (such as Rhodococcus equi infections and xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis). Disease in the immunosuppressed host (such as respiratory viruses in cancer and transplant patients, febrile neutropenia, and mucocutaneous diseases in patients with HIV) receives appropriate attention. As with any multi-authored text, the quality of the chapters varies, but is generally high. A standard chapter format would facilitate navigation. A welcome improvement to prior volumes is the inclusion of topics specific to women's issues: sepsis in obstetric and gynecologic patients, and pneumonia, tuberculosis, and urinary tract infections in pregnancy. (Unfortunately, these are two of the weaker chapters in the volume. An outdated approach to management of TB in pregnancy is a glaring example.) Unlike previous volumes, there is no attention topediatric infectious diseases. This book, like previous volumes in the series, will make a useful addition to the bookshelf of most infectious disease specialists and trainees. The only caveats are the relatively high cost compared to other available resources, the relatively low quality of a few chapters, and the paucity of diagrams and illustrations (there are seven figures in the whole book). The latest volume in the annual series summarizing and critiquing recent developments in the field. The 15 studies discuss such topics as managing patients with "Nocardia" infection, pyomyositis as a nontropical disease, radionuclide imaging of infection in soft tissue and bone, the varicella vaccine, new fungal pathogens, alcohol and infection, and the use of oral cephalosporins in infants and children. Addressed to students and practitioners specializing in infectious diseases or related fields, or nonspecialists who encounter it. . Deals with contemporary questions and problems in the field and offers critical evaluation of information on recent advances. Some subjects covered include lipid formulations of amphotericin B, cost- effectiveness in the use of antibiotics, trends in treatment of antimicrobial-resistant entercoccal infections, and management of tuberculosis infection. Other topics are pediatric congenital toxoplasmosis, herpes simplex of the ocular anterior segment, chronic granulomatous disease, and clinical features, pathogenesis, and potential biological warfare threat of anthrax. Remington teaches medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.
