Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology: Sixth Edition

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. During the past five years, extraordinary advances in imaging technologies have made the diagnosis of disease and injury faster, more accurate, safer, and more cost effective. This new edition of Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology describes and illustrates these new techniques to prepare medical students and other radiology learners to provide optimal and up-to-date diagnostic imaging of their patients. Not only are new imaging techniques introduced, such as multidetector CT for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, diffusion-weighted magnetic-resonance imaging of stroke, and molecular imaging for the early diagnosis of cancer, but hundreds of new diagnostic images have been included, illustrating the radiological characteristics of disease on state-of-the-art digital radiography, ultrasound, multicetector computed tomography, and magnetic-resonance images. The new edition has been completely revised and updated, yet it maintains the successful organization of the previous edition, presenting imaging concepts in an orderly and comprehensible manner. The interventional radiology chapter now includes vertebroplasty for treatment of painful compression fractures, uterine artery embolization of fibroid tumors, and radiofrequency ablation of malignant tumors. A completely new chapter covers the latest developments in imaging, including virtual colonoscopy, virtual bronchoscopy, three-dimensional ultrasound, fusion imaging with PET-CT (positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography), CT coronary calcium scoring, multidetector CT gated cardiac imaging, functional magnetic-resonance imaging, and molecular imaging. Through all its editions Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology has been the standard introductory text for medical students studying radiology in courses and clerkships. It is also now widely recommended reading for radiology residents and for residents and fellows in other fields of medicire. As Director of the Core Radiology Clerkship at Massachusetts General Hospital for more than twenty-five years, Dr. Novelline has trained thousands of medical students and residents, and all of the material included in this new edition has been student tested for clarity and comprehensibility. Robert Novelline continues in his outstanding fashion to update an excellent beginning radiology text. This is the fifth edition of a text (last edition 1988) written as an introduction to radiology for medical students. In 1964, Lucy Frank Squires published the first edition, which became a standard for education of medical students. Dr. Squires recently passed away, but her teaching enthusiasm and spirit are maintained in eloquent fashion by her colleague and friend, Dr. Novelline. This is written as an introduction to radiology concepts, beginning with the most basic fundamentals and applying them to clinical practice in informative and memorable ways. The text is appropriately aimed at medical students and students in allied health fields. It is intended to be read cover-to-cover as principles are taught, illustrated, and tested in cumulative fashion. The author is a credible source, drawing from his years of experience teaching medical students as well as from the experience of his mentor, Dr. Squires. Without changing its purpose, this text has been rewritten considerably and is nearly doubled in size. New chapters in anatomy and subspecialty areas are included. New to this edition are chapters emphasizing primary care areas, including women's imaging, men's imaging, pediatric radiology, and AIDS. This edition also contains photographs of patients undergoing exams in radiology suites and discussions of the patients' experiences in the department. As before, unknown cases are included in most chapters with answers provided in an appendix. Dr. Novelline has done an incredible job, taking an excellent text and improving it. Most changes to a text of this caliber would beless significant because the author would perhaps fear destroying an icon. Instead, the author has kept the best parts of the previous editions, adding and updating to create a new incredible educational tool for a reasonable price that will stand the test of time. This text belongs in the personal library of every medical student. A text for medical students on basic principles of diagnostic radiology, featuring many b&w photos and diagrams, and b&w and color images from computed tomography, magnetic resonance, and ultrasound. Includes case examples with questions and answers. This fifth edition contains new images, and five new chapters on anatomy, vascular imaging, interventional radiology, imaging of medical conditions of men, women, and children, and the use of radiology to track the course of diseases such as TB and AIDS. Also useful as an instruction manual for those in the allied health sciences. .
