Clinical Problems, Injuries and Complications of Gynecologic and Obstetric Surgery

This book is a compilation of 100 case abstracts illustrating not uncommon problems that may arise during gynecologic surgery. This third edition updates the second edition published in 1988. Both were edited by Dr. David Nichols, with Dr. John DeLancey as coeditor on this edition. The purpose remains to stimulate resourceful thinking in the surgically inclined reader. Although the focus may seem to be on correcting injuries and complications that have already occurred, most chapters deal with prevention as well. This book is directed to all gynecologic surgeons. This has been, and still is, an extremely helpful text to residents for their in-service examination and to gynecologists preparing for oral board examinations. There are more than 75 authors for the book's 100 short chapters. Many authors are well-known gynecologic surgeons and are very credible. Each chapter deals with a complication of surgery. Major sections include complication of laparotomy, adnexal surgery, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, urinary tract injuries, intestinal tract injuries, pelvic cancer surgery, minor gynecologic surgery, obstetric surgery (two cases only), and nine other miscellaneous problems. The only major difference from the second edition is the deletion of the section on breast surgery. The chapters are from two to six pages in length and start with a case abstract. This is followed by a discussion of the case and often includes a differential diagnosis, a discussion of prevention of the problem, and the options on how to deal with the particular situation. Illustrations are not abundant but are adequate. References are pertinent and as current as the problem requires. Because of itsunique case-oriented structure and impressive list of contributing authors, this book remains a necessary addition to the library of any resident-in-training or practicing gynecologic surgeon. A stimulation of resourceful thinking for surgeons rather than a comprehensive catalogue of everything that could go wrong during or after gynecologic or obstetric surgery. The contributors describe and explain their own preferred solution to complications arising from the several kinds of procedures and to problems and injuries in the urinary tract and intestine. Revised from the 1988 second edition to reflect the acceptance of then emerging techniques and current emphasis on cost- effectiveness. A high-quality volume. Nichols, David H., MD (Harvard Univ); DeLancey, John O.L., MD (Univ of Michigan)The contributors represent the specialties of obstetrics and gynecology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, urology, and surgery. Most come from academic medical centers in the U.S., with one from Australia and two from Italy. Institutions prominently represented include Univ of Michigan, Louisiana State, Univ of Alabama, Brown, Baylor, Emory, Mayo, and Tufts.
