Musculoskeletal Assessment: Joint Range of Motion and Manual Muscle Strength

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some two-color illustrations. In a single volume, this text presents the principles and methodology of assessing both joint range of motion (ROM)/goniometry and manual muscle strength for the head, neck, trunk, and extremities. Joint range of motion measurement is described using the universal goniometer, tape measure, and OB "Myrin" goniometer. Joint ROM and muscle strength evaluation are described with standard and alternate testing positions. In this text range of motion (ROM) and manual muscle testing (MMT) are combined into one reference utilizing an anatomical area format. The purpose is to combine into one reference the principles and methodology of ROM and MMT. This format may be useful in integrating functional assessment with entry level students. The assessment techniques are well combined. The text is written for students beginning the clinical assessment process, and is appropriate for this group. The author's previous education experience well qualifies her to organize this standard of information. The book contains three main components: general anatomic principles; principles and methodology of ROM; and principles and methodology of MMT. The inclusion of functional application/considerations for ROM/ strength does help clarify the evaluation process. The text is basically a reconfiguration of well known principles and methodology of ROM and MMT. The format would be appropriate and useful for entry level students, but would be of limited consequence for practicing clinicians. Presents principles and methodology of assessing both joint range of motion (ROM)/goniometry and manual muscle strength for the head, neck, trunk, and extremities. Joint ROM measurement is described using the universal goniometer, tape measure, and OB "Myrin" goniometer. Joint ROM and muscle strength evaluation are described with standard and alternate testing positions. Some 800 b&w photos and illustrations demonstrate positions and instrument placement. This second edition features 200 new photos, two-color line art, and new material. For undergraduate students in occupational and physical therapy. Wire spiral binding.
