Now with even more practical, clinically focused information on new drugs, new therapies, and treatments, the 7th Edition provides cutting-edge guidance on every aspect of the field.New to this Edition: Offers eleven new chapters: Vasoactive Peptides and the Kidney • Disturbances of Calcium, Magnesium, and Phosphate Metabolism • Approach to the Patient with Renal Disease • Interpretation of Urine Electrolyte and Acid-Base Parameters • Hematologic Consequences of Renal Disease • Cardiovascular Aspects of Renal Disease • Neuropsychiatric Aspects of Renal Disease • Erythropoietin Therapy in Renal Disease and Renal Failure • Intensive Care Nephrology • Extracorporeal Treatment of Poisoning • and Donor and Recipient Issues in Renal Transplantation. Discusses the hottest topics in the field, including acid-base disorders • antihypertensive drugs • erythropoietin therapy in renal disease and renal failure • prescribing drugs in renal disease • intensive care nephrology • cardiovascular aspects of renal disease • hemodialysis • and renal osteodystrophies. Includes fresh perspective from over 125 international contributors—25 new to this edition. Provides a more user-friendly format that includes an updated design, with more tables, boxes and key references for even faster access to important clinical information • over 30,000 streamlined and updated references • and key papers highlighted throughout the text. The sixth edition (2000) is recommended for a minimum core collection by Brandon/Hill. The two volumes of the 7th contain 66 chapters by kidney specialists--most from the US, but quite a few from countries including Israel, France, Lebanon, The Netherlands, Canada, Brazil and the Czech Republic. The first 17 chapters in volume one address the elements of normal renal structure and function. The remaining chapters cover disturbances in control of body fluid volume, pathogenesis and pathophysiology of renal disease, and management of patients with renal failure. Topics include nutritional therapy in renal disease; transplantation immunobiology; cardiovascular aspects of chronic kidney disease; renal neoplasia, laboratory assessment of kidney disease; adaptation to nephron loss; effects of aging on renal function and disease; and specific pharmacologic approaches to clinical renoprotection.
