Practical Obstetric Anesthesia

This multiauthored book provides a brief, practical review of the anesthetic and analgesic management of obstetric patients. The purpose is to provide practical, safe, cost- and time-effective strategies for providing analgesia and anesthesia to obstetric patients. The book addresses common problems and controversies in obstetric anesthesia and gives practical advice for dealing with many of these issues. Many of the authors are known expert clinicians, and the book therefore largely fulfills the objectives of the authors. The book is aimed at practicing anesthesiologists and anesthesiology residents. The book addresses common and often controversial areas of analgesic and anesthetic management, making practical and useful suggestions. This is generally an excellent review text for the analgesic and anesthetic management of obstetric patients. It is concise, yet it covers most areas in enough detail. However, the management of the difficult airway in the obstetric patient does not receive enough attention, and the algorithm that deals with the failed airway in the obstetric patient is probably outdated for 1997. Unfortunately, one of the significant weakness is that the references in many of the chapters are not current. Many of the chapters express the personal opinions of the authors or their institution, which is important in a practical guide, but could have been presented more as a personal synthesis of the available scientific data. Generally, this book will be a good addition to the library of the practicing anesthesiologist who provides services in the obstetric suite, and it is a useful review for the anesthesiology resident. It would be a good addition to the librariesof training programs. Dewan, David M., MD (Bowman Gray School of Medicine); Hood, David D., MD (Bowman Gray School of Medicine)The contributors represent the specialties of anesthesiology and obstetric anesthesia. Most are from academic medical centers in the U.S., with two from Canada. Institutions prominently represented include Bowman Gray School of Medicine and Univ of Pennsylvania.
