Biological and Clinical Basis of Infectious Diseases

This is the fifth edition of a book that initially was developed as a reference source for medical students during infectious disease elective rotations. If the intended audience remains those students, this edition is justified. The authors have attempted to update recent new advances and place them in the context of the clinical disease itself. It is suitable for the medical student in infectious diseases rotations and, perhaps, first- or second-year housestaff. The book suffers from lack of depth in almost all chapters. There is one very unfortunate chapter title that appears to link the chronic fatigue syndrome to viral infections of the upper respiratory tract. This most likely inadvertent granting of legitimacy to a viral causation theory is regrettable. The individual chapters have subheadings of content within the chapter listed below the title. Some readers may like this; others may find it unnecessary. In the fungal infection chapter, where all subcomponents for each disease are the same, tighter editorial corrections would have helped. Readers beyond the level of medical student may want to seek greater in-depth information in several of the comprehensive infectious disease texts recently published. Shulman, Stanford T., MD (Northwestern Univ); Phair, John P., MD (Northwestern Univ); Peterson, Lance R., MD (Northwestern Univ); Warren, John R., MD (Northwestern Univ)The contributors represent the specialties of microbiology, immunology, infectious diseases, pathology, and pediatrics. Most are from U.S. hospitals and universities, including USC, Northwestern, and Univ of Chicago.
