Primary Care Dermatology

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. Guide for primary care practitioners on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with skin disorders and other common cutaneous problems. The book contains sections on dermatologic emergencies, procedures, considerations for treatment, and in alphabetical order, common dermatologic disorders. The book intends to be the first dermatology text written solely for primary care healthcare providers. Given the changing landscape of organized medicine with its emphasis on treatment at the primary care level for what was once considered specialty care, this is indeed a worthy objective. With the exception of a few omissions, the book generally meets this goal. The intended audience includes any primary care oriented healthcare provider. The book's beginning features text preceded by numerous high quality color photomicrographs of various dermatologic disorders. An introductory section includes important considerations for dermatologic treatment, including topics in skin care and pharmacologic principles. Commonly encountered skin disorders are listed alphabetically in individual chapters and are well referenced. Each of these chapters include discussions on treatment, pitfalls and problems of a given cutaneous disease, and uniquely, referral and consultation guidelines. The book concludes with a concise section on common office procedures easily performed by nondermatologists. The only complaint one may have with this fine textbook is the sporadic use of photographs interspersed among the chapters describing skin diseases. Given the visual nature of dermatology, photographs are essential in visualizing the various dermatoses. Though most of the dermatologic conditions are represented by excellent photographs in the beginning of the book, illustrative photos accompanying the written text is preferable. This minor criticismaside, this book is an excellent addition for the primary care oriented library. It is easily used as both an accessible reference for office practice, or read cover to cover providing a well rounded introductory course in dermatology. Arndt, Kenneth A., MD (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston); Wintroub, Bruce U., MD (UCSF); Robinson, June K., MD (Northwestern Univ); LeBoit, Philip E., MD (UCSF)The contributors represent the specialties of dermatology, pediatrics, and pathology. Most are from U.S. universities and medical centers, including Harvard, UCSF, Univ of Massachusetts, Northwestern, Duke, and Beth Isreal Deaconess Medical Center.
