Atlas of Advanced Orthodontics: A Guide to Clinical Efficiency

The book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations. This book is meant as a companion book to the author's earlier text, Atlas of Orthodontics: Principles and Clinical Applications (WB Saunders Company 1993). It concentrates strictly on clinical efficiency. The purpose is to discuss advanced concepts in orthodontic treatment therapy, but this book only promotes the author's own appliance system. It discusses some of the technological advancements in orthodontics today but it really does not discuss advanced concepts in treatment planning. It is intended for all orthodontic practitioners. The author is a seasoned clinical/researcher with a university appointment. He has designed and marketed his own appliance system. This book discusses basic orthodontic information, but it spends much time discussing the author and his appliance system. Although well illustrated, I felt that the majority of what was presented was basic knowledge to the average orthodontist with the exception of the Viazis appliance system. The book should have gone in a real direction and discussed advanced concepts such as osteogenic distraction, lingual, cleft palate, etc. This book should have been titled the Viazis system, because that is all that is represented. It does not discuss advanced concepts in the field, but rather one man's beliefs supported by numerous cases using his own appliance. Although he may feel his appliance is a technologic hybrid, I found no overwhelming evidence supporting the fact that it is better than other straight wire systems.
