Sports Medicine in Primary Care

This book covers a comprehensive collection of timely topics relevant to the care of athletes and patients who participate in athletic activities. This information will be extremely helpful not only to primary care physicians but also to any physician or surgeon who takes care of athletes. This book is easily readable and well illustrated and will serve as an excellent reference for physicians who care for both serious athletes and "weekend warriors." This textbook is designed to be a general reference for primary care sports medicine. According to the editor, the purpose is to allow primary care physicians to streamline musculoskeletal problems in the office and to feel comfortable with rehab, return-to-play, and athletes with common medical problems. The editor's objectives are met in an organized, easy to read format. The text is intended for practicing primary care physicians without a background in sports medicine. The book would also prove useful to medical students, therapists, athletic trainers, and specialists as a reference tool. The editor and the other individual chapter authors are known specialists in the field of primary care sports medicine. Included is a good overview of what primary care sports medicine encompasses. This includes preparticipation and post-injury athlete evaluation and preparation for future sports activities. What is particularly useful for clinicians without a great deal of sports medicine experience is the attention paid to athletes with premorbid conditions. Physicians can receive reassurance that their patients are indeed able to continue with an active lifestyle. Also, the chapter on joint aspiration and injection gives a basis for corticosteroid use as well as instruction for the reader on a variety of techniques. This text is an excellent resource for practicing clinicians in managing their patients. The book is organized to allow the reader to follow through from diagnosis and treatment to rehab and return-to-play. Many texts fail to address the issue of return-to-play and physicians are left to struggle with this difficult dilemma. This text is similar to Snider's Essentialsof Musculoskeletal Care (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, 1997), but should prove more useful with the return-to-play guidelines provided.
