Eye in Contact Lens Wear

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. Text on the advances made in the understanding of the mechanisms of the eye and the physiological changes that take place during contact lens wear. The second edition of this book updates the edition published in 1985 with the more recent research in this field. This book supplements the author's writings in conjunction with several leading authors on the topics of the cornea and contact lenses. The aim is to provide an updated reference on the effects and relationship of contact lens wear on the human eye. The author points out that knowledge of contact lens effects on the eye is directly related to the way the population uses these lenses today. As researchers continue to try to find the optimum lens for extended wear, they also learn more about the way human eyes react to contact lenses. The author successfully breaks down and explains the most recent studies on the effects of contact lens wear, while adding an occasional opinion or idea of his own. This book is a mini-reference for any student or professional in cornea and contact lens research. The information contained in this volume is useful for anyone learning the anatomy and functional mechanism of the anterior segment of the eye. The author is a well-published and credible authority on the subject. Illustrations are pertinent, well labeled, and adequate for supplementing the text. There are also tables that are helpful for quick reference. The color plates help emphasize the text and make excellent references. References to published literature are adequate, and the majority are current to the subject. The overall appearance of the book is excellent. Some helpful features of this book include a list of subheadings and subjects at the beginning of each chapter and a concise index at the end of the book. This is a useful book for any student of optometry or ophthalmologystudying the physiology of the anterior segment (eyelids, conjunctiva, tears, limbus, and cornea). It also has clinical value for the clinician because it covers important concepts of contact lens wear. In the book, the author not only carefully explains many recent landmark studies on contact lens wear, but writes about other studies that he feels are not credible for any reason. Overall, this book makes a nice, easy to read addition to a reference collection. Ten contributions address such topics as the anatomy of the eyelids, conjunctiva, tears, anterior limbus, contact lens wear and the epithelium, corneal touch thresholds, and corneal swelling and its clinical sequelae. The three remaining contributions are written by Larke's (optometry, U. of Wales, Cardiff) colleagues on the subjects of lens deposition and spoilation, the cornea, and risks and types of infection provoked by contact wear. Twelve pages of color plates include photos and micrographs.
