Sports Injuries: Diagnosis and Management

"A completely updated and extended edition of this highly successful and practical handbook, Sports Injuries: diagnosis and management provides the most comprehensive single source for the management of soft-tissue injuries." "Designed and written for clarity, the book provides an equal balance of scientific information and clinical guidance, emphasizing an evidenced-based approach. Divided into 20 chapters the book covers biomechanics of injury, tissue healing, sports massage, taping, exercise therapy and training, first contact management, gait and detailed coverage of sports injuries to the upper limb, lower limb and trunk." Well referenced and extensively illustrated, this greatly expanded and revised text will continue to be invaluable to physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, sports and massage therapists, medical practitioners, coaches, trainers and all those involved in the treatment of athletes and sports people. This is a basic reference covering a diversity of subjects pertaining to exercise science, sports medicine, and physiotherapy. Originally published in 1993, this is the second edition. The book is designed to serve as a practical guide for practitioners involved in the care of injured athletes. Numerous books have been published with a similar objective; however, the development of new texts that convey current and practical information in an innovative and easy-to-read format are always welcome. The author does an admirable job of providing readers with such a text. It is authored by a credible authority on sports physiotherapy. His work is targeted to physicians, physiotherapists, exercise therapists, and students of these disciplines. Even coaches and athletes might find certain chapters useful. The text is divided into two major sections. The first examines general aspects of sports-related injury and management, including the basic science of biomechanics and healing, as well as practical information related to massage, taping, and exercise therapy. The second section contains chapters focusing on specific musculoskeletal injuries. Perhaps the most unique feature of this text is its emphasis on sports physiotherapy and functional rehabilitation. It is also enhanced by the author's generous use of charts, tables, and diagrams, which serve as valuable and readily accessible sources of information. This book provides detailed information on subject matter discussed minimally, or not at all, in many general sports medicine reference texts. The emphasis placed on sports physiotherapy makes it a unique publication compared with other books in this field. The author has updated his firstedition with contributions from many new resources and has added chapters on exercise therapy, sports massage, and taping. In doing so, he has created a text that many practitioners and students will find quite useful. Drawing on sports science and sports physiotherapy, the volume is divided into two sections, the first covering general aspects of injury and management such as anatomy, biomechanics, sports psychology, sports massage, taping, and exercise therapy, and the second treating 12 separate areas of the body including areas of the spine and facial injuries. .
