Handbook of Sports Medicine

A comprehensive clinical reference that addresses medical problems and injuries in a systematic manner, including initial assessment, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. As exercise and sports have become increasingly popular in the past decade, a growing need for family physicians to have access to information about the sports medicine concerns of their patients has developed. This easy-to-use reference provides primary care practitioners and therapists with the tools they need to evaluate and manage injuries and medical problems in both athletes and non-athletes.
The editors emphasize a symptom-oriented approach that mimics how problems are experienced in everyday practice. A differential diagnosis, based on the area of complaint, is given and the reader is guided through physical findings, radiographs, and special tests that confirm a given diagnosis. This is the ideal sports medicine textbook for family physicians.
A comprehensive clinical reference that addresses medical problems and injuries in a systematic manner, including initial assessment, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. This book presents a problem-oriented approach to sports medicine. It is fairly comprehensive and covers both medical and musculoskeletal problems faced by the team physician who takes care of sport-related problems. The purpose is to provide a reference that addresses both injuries and medical problems in a systematic manner, including initial assessment, evaluation, and treatment. The objectives stated in the preface are worthy, and they are met. According to the editors, this book is written for sports medicine specialists, with the primary care provider as the second audience. The editors are certainly credible in the field of primary care sports medicine. Various aspects of sports medicine, including orthopedic problems (injuries, possible surgery), medical problems (such as the pre-participation exam), and others are discussed. The best feature is the problem-oriented approach. A shortcoming is the lack of detail in some chapters. This book provides a useful resource for the primary care physician interested in sports medicine. It offers full coverage of various topics important to anyone serving as a team physician. It is useful to both the primary care as well as the orthopedic physician in this regard. In some chapters, there is not enough detail for the experienced sports medicine physician looking for a resource for care of specific problems. Provides physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists with a reference that addresses both injuries and medical problems in a systematic manner, including initial assessment, evaluation, and treatment. Offers information on the pre-participation physical examination, guidelines for qualifying to participate, anti- inflammatory medicines and modalities for managing acute and chronic injuries, and other topics. Whenever possible, uses the specific symptoms that athletes exhibit, and presents algorithms to help form a quick differential diagnosis. Revised from the first edition (no date noted) based on reader input. The CiP shows the ISBN as 0-05-064041-0. .
