Environmental Vision: Interactions of the Eye, Vision and the Environment

This book is a repository of virtually every aspect of environmental and occupational vision. It is a compendium of information on all forms of radiant energy, including lasers, the principles for determining the need for protection of the eyes with sunglasses and contact lenses, the approaches to interdiction with safety procedures in welding, suntanning, and use of video display terminals, and how to evaluate these problems. The book emphasizes the concepts and methods for solving problems that occur through the interactions of eyes and vision of people with their environment. The subject is important, and the authors meet their goals to an impressive extent. The authors seem to have targeted optometrists as their audience by using materials from lectures to optometric students. The subject matter could have been presented in a broader context and could have been made pertinent for a far wider audience of professionals involved in vision safety and eye care. Many of the authors are recognized for expertise in related areas. The compilation of data from diverse sources into tables and figures is a strength of the book. Some of the data are quite old, but for the most part the references are reasonably current. The book is printed on nonglossy paper, which detracts from the quality of some figures. This is an important reference book that is both diverse and comprehensive. It is a good addition for libraries serving individuals in vision care and occupational or environmental safety. A textbook and reference text for students of optometry, providing the knowledge needed to identify, diagnose, and solve patients' problems resulting from the interaction of their eyes, vision, and the environment. It covers such concepts as lighting and radiation, the effects of radiant energy upon the eye, lasers in industrial and medical applications, protection of the eye in work and leisure activities, and the effects of video display terminals on vision. Pitts, Donald G., OD, PhD (Univ of Houston); Kleinstein, Robert N., OD, MPH, PhD (Univ of Alabama at Birmingham)All of the contributors are North American optometrists and all but two are academically based. Schools prominently represented include Univ of Houston and Univ of California at Berkeley.
