Emergency Management of Cardiovascular Disease

This book provides a reference for physicians on the essentials of assessment and management of cardiovascular disease in the emergency setting. The author emphasizes that the goal is to provide information necessary for the recognition and management of cardiovascular emergencies. The format is useful, particularly because it selects essential information from the vast literature. The book provides practical guidelines for the practicing clinician. The author has published extensively in this area and targets emergency medicine practitioners. Both he and the contributors are credible and reliable authorities on the subject matter. The illustrations, although not consistent in quality, are generally appropriate and cover a wide range, including graphs, tables, and drawings. They complement textual information on lab assessment and diagnostics of heart disease particularly well. The ECGs are somewhat inconsistent in quality. The appendix on commonly used cardiac medicines is clear and succinct. The book presents state-of-the-art approaches to cardiovascular emergencies from elementary to advanced concepts and would be valuable not only to emergency medicine practitioners but also to students of medicine at any stage in their education. A reference handbook for practicing emergency physicians. Each chapter reviews the points that are key to the recognition and management of the common types of cardiovascular emergencies. The volume is divided into four parts: anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the heart; assessing the emergency department patient with presumed cardiovascular disease; cardiovascular diseases in emergency medicine; and treatment of cardiovascular disorders. Appendices are devoted to ECG interpretation and to commonly used cardiac medications. Aghababian, Richard V., MD, FACEP (Univ of Massachusetts)The contributors represent the specialties of emergency medicine. Most are from U.S. academic medical centers. Institutions prominently represented include Univ of Massachusetts, East Carolina Univ, and Eastern Virginia Medical School.
