Endocrine and Metabolism Diseases and Disorders SourceBook: Basic Information for the Layperson about Pancreatic and Insulin-Related Disorders, Vol. 36

This is one in a series of sourcebooks for the layperson. This volume provides an encyclopedic compilation of essays on various metabolic and endocrine disorders ranging from the common (such as obesity, diabetes, hypo-, and hyperthyroidism) to less common and more esoteric conditions (such as Cushing's disease, Addison's disease, and acromegaly). The average essay is less than five printed pages. It is intended to make the layperson aware of what the endocrine system is, what glands and hormones are, and how their imbalance effects overall health. This is a book that would be useful for a patient who has been given an endocrine diagnosis and would like to read more information regarding the disease. It is too basic and superficial for medical students, but might be a reasonable introductory resource for allied health professionals. Each essay is clearly written by well respected experts in their field in relatively non-technical language. Although the chapters are clearly written, they are seriously lacking in illustrations and photographs of various disease states. There are plenty of references, some with abstracts included, and useful sources for further information (such as societies for different diseases). The index is useful and the questions and answers at the end of each chapter will probably be useful. This book will find its niche alongside the AMA'sHome Medical Encyclopedia (Random House, 1999), Barkow's The Merk Manual of Medical Information: Home Edition (Merck & Co., 1997), and other general texts for the nonmedical public. Physicians may wish to refer patients to this volume for further reading. Devoted to the recognition of symptoms, the understanding of diagnostic texts, and an introduction to various treatment options for glandular disorders, the 58 chapters of this volume are divided into six parts treating: an overview of the endocrine system, its glands, and hormonal functions, as well as pancreatic, diabetic, adrenal gland, pituitary, growth, thyroid, parathyroid, and other endocrine and metabolic disorders. .
