Sports Injuries Information for Teens: Health Tips about Sports Injuries and Injury Prevention

This resource guide for teen athletes offers basic information on sports injuries and treatment. Separate sections, often employing a question and answer format, are devoted to emergency treatment of injuries, common injuries affecting active teens, rehabilitation and physical therapy, injury prevention, sports nutrition, and safety guidelines for particular sports. Also included are a directory of national organizations in the United States and a listing of recommended additional reading. The information for this volume was gleaned primarily from publications issued by government agencies such as the Center for Disease Control, National Center for Health Statistics, and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. The text is comprehensive and divided into parts or broad subject interest areas, which are broken into chapters on individual topics. The first few parts focus on sports injuries and treatments and are followed by others on rehabilitation and prevention. There is also an interesting section on sports nutrition that provides practical information on everything from supplements and steroids to eating and hydration. The text lacks photos, but the illustrations are informative. The print, use of white space, shaded areas, and layout are attractive. Full citation information is provided on the bottom of the initial page of each chapter. Highlighted sections called "Quick Tips" and "It's a Fact!!" supply useful information on symptoms, prevention, and rehabilitation. Most chapters also include "Weird Words," helping to define technical terms. The final section, Resources for Help and Additional Information, offers a list of useful organizations with their mailing and Web addresses and often e-mail addresses. The ample index includes see and see-also references. Although designed for the circulating collections of both school and public libraries, this series entry also has value as a classroom resource or for assignment use. (Teen Health). Gr 8 Up-Along with physiological information about injuries and treatments, the special needs of teen athletes are considered in this comprehensive overview. The topic is approached from both common injuries and specific sports. Eight major sections cover basic information, emergency treatment, sports injuries common to teens, rehabilitation and physical therapy, injury prevention, sports nutrition, sports safety guidelines, and additional help and information. The brief chapters are drawn from publications of various government and professional agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Athletic Trainers' Association, National Safety Council, and National Youth Sports Safety Foundation. Full citation information is provided with each chapter. The information presented is copious and concise, arming readers with injury-preventing advice. Sidebars titled "Quick Tip," "It's a Fact," and "Weird Words" supplement the text. Of more immediate use on the playing field is Aaron Rubin's Sports Injuries and Emergencies (McGraw-Hill, 2003), with emphasis on emergency and sideline care along with "return to play" treatment. Shannon's title will be of interest to student athletes, coaches, and trainers.-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
