This book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. This is a comprehensive textbook covering all important aspects of imaging in head trauma. It is a new edition by a radiologist at an excellent academic medical center, and it is directed at a broad audience, including residents-in-training and practicing physicians in radiology and associated neurosciences. There is clearly a need for such a book, and it fulfills the author's objectives, succeeding at both a basic and advanced level. It is well written and may be used either as a reference or as a book read from cover to cover. Essentially, any important imaging feature of head trauma worth reviewing is well covered. Although the author is relatively junior, she has beautifully organized prior investigative and clinical case material into a book that is truly a joy to read. It is useful as a reference for residents and clinicians in radiology and in clinical specialties dealing with head trauma. The illustrations of case material include CT, MR, and plain radiographic images that are well photographed and clearly labeled. There is a wealth of well-documented trauma pathology contained in the book. Considering the comprehensive nature of the text, one would like to see more line drawings and color diagrams, although those that are present are striking and clear. The references are current, although occasionally original publications that form the basis of the points illustrated are not fully referenced. The table of contents is adequate. Some running heads are slightly misleading; for example, the chapter on shearing injuries and brain stem injuries is headed brain stem injuries, so that one leafing through the book would not quickly find the section on shearing. This is a minor problem,however. There is an excellent section on the sequelae of trauma, containing information not easily found in other sources. This is an attractive book and an excellent addition to the literature. It is readable and comprehensive, well illustrated and accurate. I highly recommend it to all clinicians and students wishing to learn, in-depth, about the imaging of head trauma. A concise but comprehensive, highly illustrated, up-to-date text on neuroimaging for physicians interested in head injury. The volume is divided into 10 chapters related to specific categories of injuries that have either similar pathophysiology or involve the same general area. Although primarily radiologic in focus, relevant clinical correlation is included. Not only is the characteristic imaging appearance of various head injuries illustrated, but also an explanation for that appearance is provided, so that readers can understand why it looks that way. All chapters are extensively referenced.
