Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice, 3rd Edition

The third edition of Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice is intended to meet the same goals as the first two editions -- to provide students as well as practicing anesthesiologists with an in-depth but concise presentation of those aspects of pharmacology and physiology that are relevant either directly or indirectly to the perioperative anesthetic management of patients.Since the publication of the second edition...the number of drugs available to anesthsiologists has expanded, particularly with respect to inhaled anesthetics, sedative-hypnotics, opioids, and local anethetics. The pharmacology of these drugs, as well as improved understanding of the use and side effects of drugs available for many years, necessitates frequent revisions of a textbook such as this. The field of physiology changes more slowly than that of pharmacology, but even in the area of physiology, new information and concepts require periodic updating. It is the author's goal to fill the voids created by new information and to update the information on drug behavior and organ function that has become available since the second edition. although the discussions of drug classes and organ systems remain similar to the first two editions, the contents of each chapter, as well as the figures, tables, and references, reflect the most recent information available.
