Mayo Internal Medicine Board Review, 2000-2001 Edition

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. Completely updated throughout its 23 comprehensive chapters, this new edition of the Mayo Internal Medicine Board Review is an essential study guide for American Board of Internal Medicine certification or recertification. Based on the Internal Medicine Board Review course at the Mayo Clinic, the book teaches candidates exactly what to expect on the exam, including format, types of questions, and hints on what and how to study.Key points throughout the book are highlighted by "pearls" that aid in review and retention. This edition has over 400 multiple-choice questions that follow the current exam format. Answers and explanatory notes follow the questions, and a detailed index enables readers to locate material quickly. As the title suggests, this is a review textbook of internal medicine for the American Board Examination. It is the fourth edition, the last published in 1998. It has a unique colored, highlighted, clinical pearl system throughout the book that easily draws the reader's attention. There are a number of board-type questions after each chapter, which are excellent study tools. The answers are unfortunately not referenced to the medical literature, and may be subject to institutional bias. A solid background in the field enhances the utility of this kind of review. The purpose is to provide a quick guide of general medicine. The intended audiences are residents completing their training and sitting the examination for the first time, and American general internists who are re-certifying. The editor and contributors do a credible job of covering a vast area of medicine. They do not pretend this is a comprehensive text; there are many with fine reputations already in the marketplace. The name recognition factor of the Mayo Clinic is strong, and that may give this book a market advantage. Of course a good name does not always ensure quality. All major subspecialties of internal medicine are reviewed, including, to my surprise, psychiatry, which is not generally part of core internal medicine training in most countries. The dermatology, hematolgy, and infectious disease sections have excellent color plates, and there are many fine examples of relevant diagnostic imaging in each chapter. The cardiology chapter is well broken down into three sections beginning with physical examination, the hallmark of any good text. There are good illustrations of cardiac anatomy, and manyillustrative electrocardiograms. The very nature of this review mandates an intense prose than can sometimes read as abrupt. This is a good review book for the American Board Examination in Internal Medicine, but should not be used as a reference text. It is less comprehensive than the MKSAP published by the American College of Physicians, but is physically a more manageable tome. A well-prepared user enhances the objectives of the editor and contributors. New edition of an up-to-date guide to selected topics in clinical internal medicine. Prakash (pulmonary and critical care medicine and internal medicine) and Habermann (hematology and internal medicine) of the Mayo Clinic present 23 contributions that contain continuing medical education in all fields in order to update clinicians' knowledge and help them prepare for the certifying and recertifying examinations. Topics are divided into major subspecialty areas and are written by physicians with special interest and clinical expertise in the respective subjects.
