Lovell and Winter's Pediatric Orthopaedics

This is the fourth edition of a two-volume textbook that deals with pediatric orthopedics in a thorough manner. The main purpose of the book remains the same as previous editions. That is, it helps the orthopedist through the decision-making steps necessary to deliver good patient care. Also, this edition stresses both basic scientific knowledge and clinical relevance for each disorder or disease. These truly worthy objectives were fully met by the contributors. The work is written mainly for orthopedists caring for the pediatric patient. Also, it is written at an appropriate level for orthopedic residents, fellows, and other allied medical specialties to comprehend. As such, its audience should include all medical professionals caring for the neuromusculoskeletal system affecting children and adolescent ages. The addition of Stuart L. Weinstein as a coeditor with Raymond T. Morrissy is an asset to the publication. Both men are internationally known and respected in the field of pediatric orthopedics. These hardcover volumes are esthetically appealing. The addition of a new logo, which is seen on the cover of each volume and at the beginning of each chapter, deserves some explanation. The chapters are well written by the contributors who support their works with the use of extensive and current references. The strength of these volumes lies in the current information they offer about pediatric orthopedic disorders and diseases. A third volume on how to treat these conditions is needed. It is safe to say that this work is approaching bible status. Currently, it is a primary reference for orthopedic residents and fellows in teaching institutions. It is must reading for allinvolved in caring for pediatric orthopedic patients. New edition of a two-volume reference that aims to improve the quality of life for children affected with musculoskeletal conditions. The 33 contributions indicate evidence-based preferences for treatment when such evidence exists, and clearly point out the lack thereof with other treatment alternatives. Morrissy (orthopedics, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite) and Weinstein (orthopedic surgery, U. of Iowa Hospital) entered into a give-and-take dialogue with each expert to identify controversial areas and to present a balanced view of them. New to this edition are cross-references to the third edition of the , linking the detailed surgical techniques to the indications in the textbook. Topics include embryology and development, growth in the field, imaging, the exam, assessment of gait disorders, genetic aspects, syndromes and disorders, various abnormalities, management of fractures, and the role of the orthopaedic surgeon in child abuse. Contains many b&w x-ray images and photographs.
