Primer of Dermatopathology

Hood, Antoinette F., MD(Johns Hopkins Univ); Kwan, Theodore H., MD(Harvard Univ); Mihm, Martin C., Jr., MD(Harvard Univ); Horn, Thomas D., MD(Johns Hopkins Univ) This book may as well be called "How to Read Your Own Skin Slides." The authors present the core of dermatopathology in a schematic manner to help the novice systematically approach the study of skin biopsies. Once the pathology is located at a low power view, the corresponding chapter is selected. All the possible diseases are listed in the left column, accompanied by the histological criteria with bold characters to emphasize the most important points in the middle column, and helpful details and distinguishing features in the right column. This significantly expanded second edition appears nine years after the first (1984). There are new chapters on histochemistry and subepidermal clefting. A brief section on pathophysiology has also been added, but it covers only a few diseases. This book is aimed at the dermatology or pathology resident. The photomicrographs are well selected, and this second edition has replaced some pictures to improve the visual message. Regrettably, there are still some rare inaccurate illustrations. The book also contains many drawings that greatly surpass the teaching attributes of photoimages by focusing on the pathology and filtering the distracting background. The book contains many extensive differential diagnosis lists that may help the established dermatopathologist but may confuse the resident. The idea of a schematic approach to teach dermatopathology is attractive, but it has its drawbacks. Carried to an extreme, one could imagine the scanning computer as an alternative cheaper "ersatz" pathologist. Although extremely useful to the resident in dermatology and pathology, at whom this book is aimed, pathology is not simplistic and a second morecomplete textbook is required as a backup. New edition of an introductory text for residents and nonspecialists in dermatopathology. Skin abnormalities are grouped according to location and morphological characteristics. Information includes the disease entities, the histologic criteria for diagnosis, and the differential diagnosis, including important clinical information and hints. The book contains about 400 b&w photomicrographs and drawings; The accompanying CD-ROM contains 2,000-plus color photomicrographs, as well as self-assessment quizzes. Edited by dermatologists Hood (Eastern Virginia Medical School), Theodore H. Kwan (Lahey Clinic), Martin C. Mihm, Jr. (Massachusetts General Hospital), and Bruce R. Sommer and Thomas D. Horn (both of the U. of Arkansas for Medical Sciences).
