Fundamentals of Sports Injury Management

Completely revised Second Edition provides a foundation for the prevention, recognition, assessment, management, disposition, and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses as it integrates basic medical concepts with relevant scientific information. This book speaks to students in coaching, exercise science, recreation and teacher education, for learning what to do as the first on-site respondent to a sports-related injury. Guidelines are provided to help identify common conditions initially cared-for on-site, and when to know to refer an individual to advanced care. The text contains major revisions and includes illustrations and additional tables. The book includes basic medical and scientific concepts of anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics related to the prevention, recognition, and management of sports-related injuries and illness. The purpose is to integrate basic medical concepts and related scientific information to provide a foundation for the prevention of sports-related injuries and illness. This information is important in a time of rapid rise in participation in sports and related fitness activities, especially in the venues where professional trainers may not be available to participants. Physical educators, coaches, fitness trainers, and others involved in sports-related fields would benefit from this book. Each chapter begins with clear objectives and key terms and is written in a logical sequence with numerous illustrations and photos in each section. There are concept-related questions in the form of case studies to allow the students to attempt to solve problems and integrate new material. Answers are provided later in the section. The book would benefit those professionals who are involved in sports-related fitness fields. It blends scientific and medical knowledge without overwhelming the nonprofessional athletic trainer. It also provides the student the ability to prevent and recognize basic sports-related health problems, manage them, and refer those problems that may constitute and emergency. The second edition of this introductory text on the basics of sports- related injuries and illness is streamlined, with chapters reorganized in sequence moving from upper to lower extremities, plus new boxes on conditions which need physician referral, and new chapters on respiratory and gastrointestinal tract conditions and on the diabetic athlete. The text can be used in an introductory athletic training class or sports first aid class, and can be used as a reference for coaches, physical education instructors, and supervisors in recreational sports programs. Anderson is professor and director of the Athletic Training Program at Bridgewater State College. Anderson, Marcia K., PhD, LATC (Bridgewater State Coll); Hall, Susan J., PhD (California State Univ Northridge)The contributor is from Bridgewater State Coll.
