Head and Neck Surgery: Otolaryngology

This book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. Bailey, Byron J., MD(Univ of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston); Calhoun, Karen H., MD, FACS(Univ of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston); Deskin, Robert W., MD, FAAP(Univ of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston); Johnson, Jonas T., MD(Univ of Pittsburgh); Kohut, Robert I., MD(Bowman Gray School of Medicine); Pillsbury, Harold C., III, MD(Univ of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) Previous editions of this text/reference are cited in Brandon- Hill. The aim of editor Bailey (U. of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston), his editorial team, and the long list of contributing authors has been to create and refine a reference that is also a "learning system" for the specialty—something more than a textbook—that shapes essential information into consistent and balanced chapters supported by summary tables, clear illustrations, and chapter summaries. The two volumes comprise 191 chapters arranged in sections on basic science, pediatric otolaryngology, new frontiers, head and neck surgery, otology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and miscellaneous topics (medical ethics rounds, eponyms in otolaryngology). These volumes are an excellent compilation of the literature available in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery today. I can find no major flaws. I congratulate Dr Bailey, his division and section editors, and the contributors for their achievement. This is a comprehensive textbook of head and neck surgery-otolaryngology. The editors cover the core knowledge of this specialty in two volumes of over 2000 pages. Each chapter concludes with a summary of highlights, facilitating the use of this text as a systematic learning system. A companion book also includes questions as a study guide for each chapter. This is the second edition of the book, with the first edition published in 1993. The intention is to provide a current and comprehensive text in a readable format that can be used as a learning system. The chapters are organized in a uniform manner. All chapters make use of summary tables, illustrations, and summary of highlights to promote retention and comprehension. The editors and contributors are among the most respected in their field. The audience is otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons both in residency and in practice. This is an appropriate audience. The book will be most useful to otolaryngologists in training. The core knowledge of this specialtyis presented. Basic scientific knowledge as well as clinical and surgical medicine are comprehensively reviewed. Many chapters have been revised in this second edition and references are current. The index is thorough. The separate study guide contains questions for each chapter. The text is also published on CD-ROM, which will further facilitate its use as a quick and handy reference. This is one of the leading comprehensive textbooks in the field. Intended as a systematic learning system, its uniform structure and consistent use of tables and high-quality illustrations makes it an essential choice for otolaryngology residents. Many practitioners will alsobenefit from this current review of the specialty. The overall quality of the text is first rate. This second edition contains significant improvements and should be included in collections at medical school and otolaryngology department libraries. This is a new comprehensive textbook covering the basic science and full range of diagnoses and treatments in the field of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. The book is designed to be a complete learning system for the otolaryngologist. Key features include: 1) liberal use of summary tables and illustrations; 2) highlight summaries at the end of each chapter; and 3) a companion multiple choice booklet. The editors have successfully created a format through which information essential to an otolaryngologist can be mastered. The authors, who are among the most respected in the field, have written this book for practicing otolaryngologists and those in residency training. The book is generously illustrated with black-and-white photos and high quality illustrations. References are current and numerous. Tables, graphs, and especially the end-of-chapter highlights enhance the excellent text. Two attractive volumes contain virtually all information important to this field as well as thought-provoking chapters dealing with complications, perioperative management issues, medical ethics, medical information and the understanding of medical data. The book has succeeded in its format, to become a complete learning system for the otolaryngologist. This book may become the standard text for otolaryngologists-in training and deserves to be in the collection of all practitioners in this field. New edition of a text dealing with the specialty of head and neck surgery. The format contains key features such as consistent and balanced chapter elements, heavy use of summary tables, illustrations, end-of-chapter summaries, and multiple-choice questions for self- testing.
