Synopsis of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

This first edition of a nearly comprehensive textbook of pediatric emergency medicine focuses primarily on diagnosis and treatment. The goal is to provide a user-friendly text to facilitate diagnosis and treatment of pediatric emergencies at the patient's bedside. This book is meant to supplement, and not replace, the authors' Textbook of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. This is a worthwhile objective because many large textbooks are too unwieldy to be carried to the bedside; this book is portable and easy to read. The authors recommend this book primarily to medical students and emergency medicine residents as well as practitioners. Emergency medicine residents would like this book's focus on diagnosis and treatment. Medical students may yearn for more information on epidemiology and pathophysiology. Practitioners should rely on the definitive textbook. The authors are well-regarded authorities on pediatric emergency medicine. They are emergency department directors at two of the nation's top children's hospitals, and they are authors of the aforementioned textbook. This book provides many useful tables and illustrations, especially in the procedure section. It contains many chapters that are titled by symptom, which aids in making a diagnosis. The index is detailed, yet easy to use, and even notes if a citation is to text, table, or figure. This is a useful, easy-to-use book. Although the entire contents and more are available in the complete Textbook, this book is more portable and therefore is more likely be read by residents and students who can read it at work as well as at home. The focus on diagnosis and treatmentfacilitates information gathering. The authors could improve the section on cardiac emergencies to include more detail on neonatal emergencies and brief pathophysiology. Based on the , this synopsis delivers quick access to clinical information needed in pediatric emergency medicine. Emphasis is on evaluation, diagnosis, and management, with coverage of life-threatening emergencies, trauma, procedures, signs and symptoms, medical illness, surgical conditions, and psychosocial emergencies. Detailed b&w diagrams, and a few photos, are included. Fleisher teaches pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and is chief of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Children's Hospital of Boston. Ludwig teaches pediatrics and emergency medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Based on the comprehensive Textbook of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, 3rd ed., the concise, practical Synopsis concentrates on fewer conditions and emphasizes clinical manifestations on treatment, for quick retrieval of clinically essential information under the circumstances of pediatric emergency. For medical students and physicians.
