Practical Approach to Cardiac Anesthesia

This handbook and reference provides doctors with current information on the subspecialty of cardiac anesthesia. Written by researchers, clinicians, and lecturers, it supplies specific clinical recommendations with highlighted key points and chapter outlines. Sections concentrate on anesthetic management for cardiac surgery, anesthetic management of specific cardiac disorders, circulatory support and organ preservation, thoracic anesthesia, and pain management. Charts, diagrams, and graphs support the text throughout. This is the second edition of a manual of practical concepts in the conduct of cardiovascular anesthesia, thoracic anesthesia, and mechanical circulatory assistance and bypass. All retained chapters have been updated from the first edition, and several have been completely rewritten to include the latest changes in the current practice. New chapters on pain management, pediatric circulatory assist techniques, and thoracic anesthesia have been added as well. The authors intend this book to serve as a practical reference for residents, fellows, accomplished cardiac anesthesiologists, and cardiac perfusionists. These objectives are clearly met by the comprehensive, yet practical, scope and content of the book. The authors include anesthesiologists, surgeons, and perfusionists from 19 institutions in the United States. Most are highly regarded experts in their respective fields. They present a comprehensive and multidisciplinary view of the various issues associated with the management of the patient undergoing cardiac surgery. The chapters are organized into four main sections. Each chapter is in outline format and has a reference list and a suggested readings list. Although references are somewhat scant and dated, they are generally pertinent. The authors use many tables, graphs, and drawings to illustrate important issues. They consistently succeed in making potentially difficult concepts succinct and coherent. The concise outline format gives an organized feel to each chapter. The index is also detailed and complete. This is an excellent practical reference for cardiac anesthesia and perfusion trainees. It is certainly useful review and guide for the practicing anesthesiologist andperfusionist. I highly recommend its presence in any library as a quick and effective review of this topic. Hensley, Fredrick A., Jr., MD (Pennsylvania State Univ); Martin, Donald E., MD (Pennsylvania State Univ)The contributors represent the specialties of anesthesiology, pediatrics, cardiothoracic surgery, and cardiology. All are from U.S. academic medical centers. Institutions prominently represented include Pennsylvania State Univ, Harvard, Emory, Univ of Pittsburgh, and Medical Coll of Wisconsin.
