Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia

The comprehensive reference provides a review of the anesthetic and preoperative management of patients with congenital cardiac abnormalities, along with current information on the latest techniques and equipment. Expert discussions of specific topics includes Neonatal Myocardial and Circulatory Function, Pediatric Echocardiography, Tetralogy of Fallout, Heart and Lung Transplantation in Children, and more. Graphs and diagrams. This book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. This is the second edition of a popular book on the anesthetic management of the patient with congenital heart disease. The previous edition was published in 1988. The author sought to provide a comprehensive review of anesthetic techniques and principles governing the care of these patients. The first edition had been used by many anesthesiologists because of its thorough and clear coverage of this small but challenging subspecialty. The author ably fulfilled her goal of amplifying the salient points of the first edition while adding relevant topics such as heart transplantation and new monitoring techniques. The contributors are generally acknowledged experts in the field of pediatric cardiac anesthesia. They targeted this book at pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, surgeons, and cardiologists at all levels of experience. Although the overall complexity of the various chapters is certainly appropriate for this audience, the clarity and conciseness of the text will make this a useful reference for medical students as well. Illustrations, graphs, and tables are sufficient for most chapters. They are relevant and enlightening, especially for the chapters on specific congenital lesions. The references are occasionally dated because most of the chapters were not completely rewritten for this new edition. The printing is clear, but the margins are too small for note-taking. This second edition improves on the first edition with the expanded coverage of new topics such as echocardiography and of relevant topics such as management of the patient with congenital heart disease for noncardiac surgery. This, coupled with the refinement and update of older chapters, make this book a worthyaddition to any library. Lake, Carol L., MD (Univ of Virginia)The contributors are all U.S. based, and most are pediatric anesthesiologists. Represented institutions include Univ of Virginia, Univ of Pennsylvania, and Children's Hospitals in Cincinnati and Boston.
