This book is a compilation of scientific articles on the performance and behaviors of several biomaterials and medical devices. The biological response, mechanical properties, and the degradation of biomaterials are all discussed. The purpose is to present several perspectives of leading biomaterials researchers on the issues related to the manufacture and performance of biomaterials. The international mixture of experts provides an in-depth view of selected areas of biomaterials research. This book was written for students, researchers, and clinicians with interests in understanding some of the issues associated with the use of biomaterials and medical devices. These include, among others, the social impact of medical devices and the legal and ethical problems facing those in the biomaterials community. The black-and-white illustrations in this book are of good quality. The references are current and of sufficient quantity for further study of a subject. The book has a good overall appearance. This book addresses many current issues related to biomaterials performance and provides American and European perspectives on medical devices. Scientific issues as well as legal and society issues related to the use of materials in the human body are well discussed. This book is an excellent resource for biomaterials scientists and others interested in the use of medical devices. Experts from major university hospitals, materials scientists specializing in biomaterials, and development engineers working for implant manufacturers address the major clinical and materials concerns related to implantable devices, which evolve around the following issues: mechanisms of fixation; foreign-body immune response; generation and consequences of ionic and wear debris; and materials selection, design and manufacturing schemes, as well as surgical techniques, that will maximize the safety and efficacy of the devices. Kossowsky, Ram, PhD (Emerging Technologies, Inc.); Kossovsky, Nir, MD (UCLA)These are the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Materials Science and Implant Orthopaedic Surgery II held in Crete from June 19 to July 2, 1994. The participants represent the specialties of orthopedics, biomaterials, biomedical engineering, pathology, metallurgical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, and chemistry. They are from universities throughout the world, including the U.S., Canada, Turkey, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, the U.K., Germany, and Greece. Institutions prominently represented include Univ of Istanbul, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Univ of Alabama at Birmingham, Univ of Durham in the U.K., Leiden Univ in the Netherlands, and Univ of Lisbon.
