Anesthesiology and the Cardiovascular Patient, Vol. 31

This is a summary of lectures and handouts from the 1996 Postgraduate Refresher Course at Snowbird on the topic of anesthesia for patients with cardiovascular disease. The content is provided almost completely from the lecturer's material, with minimal editing or peer-review. The purpose is to act as a reference for conference attendees and to be a vehicle to bring the latest concepts of anesthesia for patients with cardiovascular disease. Because this is essentially not peer-reviewed, the text meets its objectives with regard to current concepts, but should be viewed as a reference for the conference only, not as a peer-reviewed coverage of the topic. The audience for the book is similar to that for the conference, in that it is aimed primarily at the attending practitioner; however, because it is representative of many of the current concepts, its best use may be for resident education and as a facilitation device for discussions at all levels. The authors are of the most credible authorities in this area. The book is of good quality but has few illustrations, no index, and only a rudimentary table of contents. As with all multiauthored texts, the quality of references varies between chapters, but the number is quite limited in some areas. In general, the references are usually within the last 10 years, but with a few recent ones. The quality of the references overall is high. The book is good representation of the current thought on the topic of patients with cardiovascular disease undergoing anesthesia and surgery by some of the leaders in the field. However, because many of the statements and opinions are minimally supported by the provided references, the text may not meetthe criteria as full reference resource. The revised lectures from the February 1996 session of the University of Utah's Annual Postgraduate Course in Anesthesiology. Summaries rather than comprehensive treatises, they report new data and concepts of anesthesiology within the general framework of the pathophysiology and management of surgical candidates with cardiovascular disease. The topics include the coronary circulation, myocardial ischemia and hypoxemia, cost containment and efficiency in perioperative care, cardiopulmonary bypass and the brain, and anti-coagulation and reversal. No index. Stanley, T. H. (Univ of Utah); Bailey, Peter L., MD (Univ of Utah)The contributors represent the specialties of anesthesiology and cardiovascular surgery. All but one are from U.S. universities and hospitals, with Harvard and Duke prominently represented.
