The third edition of this text has been designed as a thorough and concise guide to clinical hematology and fundamentals of hemostasis. The textbook is unique in its five-part format, featuring an introduction to clinical hematology and sections on the anemias, white blood cell disorders, hemostasis / thrombosis, and laboratory methods, allowing easy incorporation into block curricula. New chapter on the use of flow cytometry, the molecular diagnostic techniques in hematopathology, and an introduction to thrombosis and anticoagulant therapy are highlights of this edition. The third edition of this book is an updated guide to clinical hematology and fundamentals of hemostasis, composed of five major parts. The first four parts introduce clinical hematology, hemostasis and thrombosis and describe anemias, white blood cell, vascular, platelet, and clotting factor disorders. The fifth and last part of this textbook describes relevant routine laboratory methods. The purpose is to serve as thorough and concise guide to clinical hematology and fundamentals of hemostasis. There is a need for a brief yet concise reference book and this edition meets the author's objectives. The author states that this book is intended for the medical technologist, hematologist, and practitioner. However, students and novices in the field will find this textbook most useful. Dr. Harmening has been instrumental in many AACLS training programs and a dedicated educator. She is a well-known and respected authority in this field, with numerous publications and contributions. Relevant photographs, diagrams, and schematics, most of them in color and of high quality, aid in the visualization and understanding of the subject matter. Pertinent references are included, although those from the past couple of years are omitted. This is a sufficiently illustrated textbook, with adequate visual aids, tables, and references. The glossary, index, and hematologic reference values on the inside covers contribute to ease of use. The chapter outlines, objectives, case studies, and questions help students in their learning process and in evaluating their understanding of the subject matter. This is a comprehensive and sufficiently thorough overview of clinical hematology and fundamentals ofhemostasis and thrombosis. This book is geared toward medical technologists and students in this field. The fifth part of the book on laboratory methods has been expanded since the previous edition to provide more comprehensive procedures used routinely in the hematology and hemostasis laboratory. A new chapter on molecular diagnostic techniques in hematopathology is also included in this third edition. The updates in the first four parts of this book and the expansion of the fifth part make this a useful textbook as well as a quick reference for students in the areas of hematology and coagulation.
