This text encompasses what clefts are and how they canbe treated from the standpoint of the speech pathologist. The authorsintroduce the reader to what a cleft is, including anatomy andembryology perspectives, and then build up to diagnosis andtreatment. The book is written as a text and reference forundergraduate and graduate students of speech, and is intended to helpnew clinicians avoid mistakes. These objectives are met by the authorsand the book is good text for those dealing with patients withcleft. The target audience of students and practitioners will behelped by this text, but it should not be limited to this audience. All medical professionals working with children, dealing with patientswith clefts, or just interested in learning more will benefit from thisbook. The authors come from respectable programs and many of themhave not only dealt with patients with clefts in their work but havepublished research in the area. They cover clefts in their entiretyincluding the types, embryology, pathophysiology, anatomy, treatment --both surgical and speech therapy -- and psychosocial-educationalimplications. The book is set up in an easy to read fashion in whicheach chapter is a building block for the next.
