Essentials of Emergency Medicine

This book provides an overview of basic treatment plans for the problems most frequently encountered in the emergency department. It covers general concepts, signs and symptoms, trauma, environmental emergencies, systematic disorders and special programs. This is the second edition of a softcover textbook that presents common emergency problems and serious conditions. The goal of this handbook is to provide a core of knowledge in emergency medicine. It is intended to introduce and provide an overview and review of the most salient features of critical emergency medicine. The book is intended for emergency medicine medical students, residents, and other emergency medicine practitioners. Chapters are divided into six sections: general concepts, signs and symptoms, trauma, environmental emergencies, systemic disorders, and special problems. Tables and charts are plentiful. Black-and-white pictures are of very good quality, and there are also good black-and-white line drawings. The book does not list references, but rather has "Recommended Reading" at the end of each chapter. A very helpful feature in this text are the "Key Considerations" that are intended to help focus on the most critical elements of patient management for each specific condition or situation. Chapter 2 introduces nine key questions, four of which are used through out the book. At the end of most chapters (all but 6 of 66 clinical chapters) are these key and considerations, which include: What is the life threat? Does the patient need admission? What is the most serious diagnosis? Have I performed a thorough work-up? Chapters are well written and easy to follow and the key considerations are well focused. This book does not replace the more extensive and comprehensive textbooks in emergency medicine that present in-depth coverage of clinical practice and pathophysiology. It may be best suited for students or residents during their rotations through the emergencydepartment who need a general overview of emergency conditions and management. This book is well positioned between a pocket handbook and comprehensive textbook. Rund, Douglas A., MD, FACEP (Ohio State); Barkin, Roger M., MD, MPH, FAAP, FACEP (Univ of Colorado); Rosen, Peter, MD, FACEP (UCSD); Sternbach, George L., MD, FACEP (Stanford Univ)The contributors represent the specialties of emergency medicine, pediatrics, and surgery. Most are from academic medical centers and hospitals in the U.S. Institutions prominently represented include Ohio State, Univ of Michigan, UCLA, and Univ of Cincinnati.
