Wounds and Lacerations: Emergency Care and Closure

The leading reference in its specialized area of emergency medicine, this book not only explains what to do in pertinent situations, but also graphically illustrates what needs to be done to minimize complications and maximize results. It walks the reader through proven procedures for a broad range of wounds at diverse anatomic sites. 314 illus. This second edition book on wounds and lacerations is quite well organized, a strength shared by the prior edition. The editor has provided indexed citations in the text and references are provided at the end of each chapter. There are many references cited between 1990 and 1995. However, quite a few references still date prior to 1990. The editor's primary objective with this new edition is to incorporate new scientific and clinical advances in emergency wound care. This new edition, he asserts, better reflects scientific investigation, including recent advances in our understanding of wound care. This very readable text appears well suited for advanced practitioners as well as residents and medical students. Dr. Trott is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, a well-regarded teaching center in emergency medicine, making him well qualified for authorship. The book has two new chapters, one on caring for the pediatric patient and another on cutaneous abscesses. In addition, there is a new section on cyanoacrylate wound adhesives. This edition also features more and higher quality illustrations than its predecessor, including many photographs illustrating nerve blocks. This is an important text in the emergency medicine literature. Although many of the chapters of the first edition were perhaps a bit too basic, this new edition makes a significantly improved effort to cite the scientific literature and contains many novel recommendations based on new data. It represents a welcome and authoritative addition to the emergency medicine literature. An up-to-date source of the principles and techniques of emergency wound care for medical personnel actively caring for emergency wounds or in training to do so. Addresses general wound-care fundamentals, basic and advanced techniques, and specific problems including lacerations, bite wounds, rabies exposure, abrasions, soft-tissue foreign bodies, burns, and disorders of the fingertip. Trott, Alexander T., MD (Univ of Cincinnati)Both contributors are from the department of pediatrics at Univ of Cincinnati.
