Diagnosis and Management of Bone Infections, Vol. 16

This is an interesting new book on diagnosis and management of bone and joint infections, written by a multidisciplinary group of specialists in infectious disease, immunologists, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and pharmacologists. The purpose is to present a comprehensive review of the medical and surgical aspects of bone and joint infections including diagnosis, management, and prevention. The integrated multidisciplinary approach to management of these complex infections is a very useful resource. Although meant primarily for specialists in infectious diseases and orthopedic surgeons, this book presents many excellent features, in particular the chapter on diabetic foot infections, which would be useful for primary care physicians as well. The book has been logically organized with sections on both common and uncommon problems. There are very useful diagrams illustrating the various stages of disease and outlining management strategies, in particular surgical options. There are pertinent discussions of relevant anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology that provide a deep understanding of disease processes. The references are exhaustive and current. The sections on diagnostic imaging are outstanding. On the whole, this authoritative, well-illustrated, and comprehensive text is a useful resource for clinicians of various specialties who are charged with taking care of patients with complex infections of bones and joints. The multidisciplinary approach outlined in this book is extremely helpful, not only for infectious disease specialists and orthopedic surgeons, but also for primary care physicians who may have to deal with common infections complicating foot injuries ordiabetic foot infections. A comprehensive review of infections involving bones and joints, for clinicians in the fields of pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, and orthopedic surgery who deal with the medical and surgical aspects of these infections. The relevant anatomical, pathophysiological, microbiological, and diagnostic aspects of these infections are reviewed in addition to their clinical presentation and therapy. The contributors include pediatric and adult infectious disease specialists, immunologists, pharmacologists, radiologists, and orthopedic surgeons with extensive clinical, teaching, laboratory, and research experience in the field. Jauregui, Luis E., MD (Medical Coll of Ohio)The contributors represent the specialties of pharmacology, infectious diseases, orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, allergy, immunology, microbiology, radiology, genetics, epidemiology, and pediatrics.
