Handbook of Olfaction and Gustation, Vol. 32

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations. Both main sections—olfaction and gustation—are thricely subdivided into the topics of anatomy and neurobiology; functional measurement, ontogeny, and genetics; and clinical applications and perspectives. The last and much shorter section on other chemosensory systems is all-of-a-piece. The new edition contains an author index and 10 new chapters to account for growth in such fields as neuroscience, functional imaging, cybernetics, toxicology, structure-activity assessment, molecular biology, and animal behavior. The Handbook is meant to appeal to a wide range of medical specialists and basic scientists in academia, industry, and government, and can serve as a textbook for graduate, medical, and postdoctoral fellows from an array of disciplines. Most contributors are from the US. This new book in the series ""Neurological Disease and Therapy"" addresses gustation and olfaction, incorporating the contributions of experts in different areas from otorhinolaryngology to virology. Most of them work in the United States. The purpose is to present a synthesis of a large body of basic and clinical knowledge on the senses of smell and taste, dividing each sense in three clear sections that focus on basic anatomo-physiology, psychophysics, and neurophysiology, and in clinical applications. Thus, this book provides a needed reference book, largely meeting the editor's objective. The present book is basically oriented to neuroscientists, but it is also useful for neurologists and other clinicians in this field. The authors and contributors are in general known and credible authorities in their respective areas. This book includes many photographs, figures, charts, and tables that ease the understanding of the text. The references are voluminous and adequate giving an up-to-date, as well as an historical perspective. The table of contents is especially useful to navigate through this text printed in a high quality paper. This is an interesting book that offers strong basic scientific knowledge, along with clinical applications in olfaction and gustation fields, gathering material in one place that is not available in such a compiled way elsewhere. It will become a basic reference book for neuroscientists and clinicians interested in the senses of smell and taste. Doty, Richard L., PhD (Univ of Pennsylvania)The contributors represent the specialties of otorhinolarygology, neuroscience, physiology, biophysics, psychology, pharmacology, toxicology, and anatomy. Most are from hospitals and universities in the U.S., with others from France, Germany, Australia, and the U.K. Institutions prominently represented include Univ of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Oxford, Johns Hopkins, Rockefeller Univ, Yale, and Northwestern.
