* Includes valuable pedagogical features such as Key Concepts, Profiles in Anesthetic Practice, Case Discussions, and Key Terms This is the second edition of a highly readable, complete textbook of basic clinical anesthesia. The authors set out to provide a concise consistent presentation of the basic principles essential to the modern practice of anesthesia and exceeded these goals. The book is not comprehensive, exhaustive, or subspecialty oriented (e.g., pediatric cardiac anesthesia and embolization before AVM surgery are not covered in depth), nor is it meant to be. However, it nicely fills the gap between introductory texts and much larger multivolume comprehensive texts (Rogers and Miller). The book appears intended for anesthesiology residents, although attending physicians may find it a worthwhile review. Residents studying for written and oral board examinations may find it particularly useful. The authors have succeeded in combining thorough text with appropriate and highly informative figures, to help organize and categorize facts. There is minimal redundancy between chapters. Key words and critical concepts are highlighted in the text (new additions to the previous edition released in 1992), which simplifies reviewing for board examinations. Case discussions at the end of each chapter serve to reinforce concepts and stimulate clinical discussions. There is a full index in addition to critical topics index (located on the inside front cover). However, the majority of references, although recent, are to major textbooks and not the original articles. This is a soft covered, reasonably sized, and economically priced textbook. It is highly recommended for all anesthesiology residents.
