Essential Otolaryngology

In expanded outline format, this book is a brief review of otolaryngology. It is heavily illustrated with line drawings, photos, x-rays, tables and graphs. Each chapter is divided by subject, and written by over 50 specialists in the various areas.
This is the sixth edition of a general review book for otolaryngology/head and neck surgery covering the major areas within the field. The purpose is to serve as a guide for specialty board preparation as well as a practical and concise reference text. The goal is to outline this diverse area of medicine, and the author is successful in this endeavor. This is targeted toward senior medical students, otolaryngology residents, and specialists in other fields. The information is organized and accurate. Although it is an excellent review text for otolaryngology residents, many of the sections are sketchy and would likely be confusing to those outside the field. The illustrations are appropriate and of good quality. The references are extensive and contribute to its usefulness as a review text. It is organized and easy to read. This is a very useful review text for any resident studying for an annual test or specialty board examination. Although it is not extensively detailed, it accomplishes its goal as a comprehensive outline of the field with appropriate references. Because it is an outline, however, many sections would be confusing to those outside the field of otolaryngology. The sixth edition is more complete and more readable than previous editions and would be an asset to any library or bookstore. Lee, K. J., MD, FACS (Yale Univ)The contributors represent the specialties of otolaryngology, audiology, head and neck surgery, neurosurgery, radiology, pathology, medical oncology, and anesthesiology. Most are from U.S. academic medical centers, with two from Canada. Institutions prominently represented include Univ of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Johns Hopkins, Yale, and George Washington Univ.
