Macroelements, Water, and Electrolytes in Sports Nutrition

The book contains black-and-white illustrations. In providing provocative insights into the interrelationship of macroelements, water, and electrolytes, this book discusses energy-yielding nutrients and their digestion and absorption, simple and complex carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, amino acids, sodium, chloride, potassium, and more. Macroelements, Water, and Electrolytes in Sports Nutrition addresses the relationship of macroelement needs and interactions to sports and exercise. Research indicates that work capacity and other measures of physical performance are influenced by the intake of water as well as several of the macroelements, including electrolytes. This book examines the convincing, and the not so convincing, evidence about the connection between exercise and sports activities and the nutrient status of individuals. This is a collection of basic nutritional information adapted for those participating in sports. The purpose is to provide information on topics of nutritional science for those participating in athletics. There is need for sound information of this type for this audience. The audience purported for this book is the athlete and a general audience. The chapters are variable, but most are written at a level that is more appropriate for nutritional professionals and not for athletes or the general public. The authors of each chapter are all authorities in their field, but most have little or no knowledge of sports and exercise. Each chapter provides sound information in an area of nutrition that has importance in high performance exercise. Most have an isolated section that attempts to relate this importance to exercise. The best part of the book is the nutritional information provided for each topic; it is excellent for nutrition professionals. The diagnoses (for this audience) are very informative. The book fails at its attempt in taking the nutritional science to a level that the general public can understand or use. There are other books in this series by the same publisher that cover the same material. The other books provide as reliable information that is more applicable to exercise science. Most of this series appears to be intended for the academic community -- for those who will teach the science to athletes. This book, which contains chapters by highly credible individuals, does not meet this objective as well. This is not the stated objective for this book. Despite all the hoopla about sports and nutrition in the US, the science of nutrition has had surprisingly little impact on the education/training of sports and exercise personnel. In a dozen chapters, academics in physical education, nutrition, and the physiological sciences aim to redress this situation in sections featuring research on the relationship of exercise to macroelements, water and electrolytes, and supplements containing macroelements. Includes the American College of Sports Medicine's guidelines for fluid intake, the rationale for components added to sports drinks, and a recipe for a homemade alternative to Gatorade. Driskell, Judy Anne, PhD, RD (Univ of Nebraska); Wolinski, Ira, PhD (Univ of Houston)
