Atlas of Orthopaedic Surgical Exposures

Covering all major approaches from the shoulder to the foot, the book gives you step-by-step visual instruction revealing the anatomy as it actually appears to the surgeon. Each chapter takes you through each layer of the approach from the initial incision to the final step in detail. Special features of the atlas include: over 400 color photographs that depict surgical anatomy; fresh cadaver specimens portray the true colors of the anatomy involved; step-by-step coverage of more than 60 approaches to the foot, hand, thigh, knee, spine, and more; identification of all structures revealed during each step of the exposure; and each approach is accompanied by practical advice on its uses, advantages, disadvantages, structures at risk, technique, helpful tricks, and what will become visible if you get off track." "Ideal for residents, Atlas of Orthopaedic Surgical Exposures offers an introduction to surgical anatomy, providing them with the essential orientation they need. Seasoned orthopaedic surgeons will turn to this book to refresh their knowledge of the surgical anatomy and ensure a smooth operation. This is a textbook on surgical exposures of the extremities, back, and neck. This book is written with the purpose of helping the surgeon plan the appropriate surgical incision and exposure by presenting the procedure in color photographs. The authos hope to show the real wound anatomy and not an artist's drawing of the different stages. These objectives are easier met for more superficial wounds as the finger and less so for the lumbar spine. The main audiences are orthopedic residents and orthopedists. The principal author is fully qualified to prepare this textbook and he is assisted by a research associate and four other contributors, two of whom are orthopedic residents. This book is divided into 13 sections. In each section an anatomical area is covered, such as shoulder/upper arm, elbow, forearm, and so on. Such topics as uses of the exposure, advanced age, disadvantages, structure at risk, technique, tricks, and how to tell if you are lost are all covered. The color photographs are very well done. Each important structure in the photo is identified by a number. There are no references, index, or drawings. Surgical photos have always been difficult to interpret and I always find it more instructional to have a professional drawing of the photos. After reviewing this book my opinion has not changed. The best of two worlds is to have the photo and drawing side-by-side. No mention is made of Henry's masterpiece Extensile Exposures, 3rd Edition (WB Saunders, 1995). A certain amount of credit has to be given to Henry whenever these types of books are written for orthopedists. This work serves a useful function and I recommend it to orthopedic residents andorthopedists. Aiming to provide a more accurate depiction of what a surgeon can expect to find while exploring a surgical approach, this color atlas uses fresh cadaver specimens so that the colors are not distorted. The volume's 13 sections are organized by the general area of the body (for example, shoulder, upper arm, elbow, hand, thigh, knee, spine, etc.), with between three and eight approaches to each area outlined in detail. Each approach discusses the following topics: the uses of the approach, advantages, disadvantages, structures at risk, technique, tricks, and how to tell if you are lost. Includes hundreds of high quality color plates. 9x12. Jordan, Christopher, MD (Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center); Mirzabeigi, Edwin, MD (NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases)
